DNS (Domain Name System) translates domain names (like yourwebsite.com<\/a>) into IP addresses that computers understand. Without DNS, you’d have to remember IP addresses for every website. Setting up DNS correctly ensures that your domain directs to the right website or service. It\u2019s like an ID card for your email address or website.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If your provider is Google Domains and you need to set up DNS records, this lesson is for you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Set DKIM for Google Domains<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Google Domains automatically creates a DKIM key when you set up Google Workspace. To enable it:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Go to the Admin Console<\/strong> and turn on DKIM.<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Click Authenticate email.<\/strong><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

In the Selected domain <\/strong>menu, choose the domain where you want to turn on DKIM.<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Click Start authentication.<\/strong><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Once the setup is done, you’ll see Authenticating email with DKIM at the top of the page.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Verify DKIM Authentication<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Send an email to someone using Gmail or Google Workspace (you can’t verify by sending yourself a message).<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

In the recipient’s inbox, open the email and view the full message header.<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n
3<\/span>
Look for Authentication-Results<\/strong> in the header. You should see something like DKIM=pass<\/strong> or DKIM=OK.<\/strong><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Set SPF for Google Domains<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

To turn on SPF, you’ll need to add a DNS TXT record at your domain provider.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Log in to your domain host’s management console and find the page for updating DNS TXT records.<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Enter the following details:<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

  • Type<\/strong>: TXT<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Host<\/strong>: @ (if for a subdomain, use the subdomain instead)<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Value<\/strong>: v=spf1 include:_spf.google.com ~all<\/code><\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • TTL<\/strong>: 1 hour (or 3600 seconds)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

    After adding the SPF record, it can take up to 48 hours to start working.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    How to set DMARC for Google Domains<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    Before setting DMARC, make sure DKIM and SPF have been authenticating emails for at least 48 hours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Prepare your policy record text.<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n
    2<\/span>
    Log in to your domain host and find the page to update DNS records.<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n
    3<\/span>
    Add or modify a DNS TXT record with the following details:<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

    • TXT record name<\/strong>: _dmarc.yourdomain.com<\/code><\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • TXT record value<\/strong>: v=DMARC1; p=none; rua=mailto:dmarc-reports@yourdomain.com<\/code><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n
